Easiest cake recipe

The book called it an easy to cake recipe, but I’ve managed to do it all wrong! The butter was too hard, the batter was runny and the cake itself ended up burned to a cinder with sunken middle.

Most importantly don’t let this set you back – even the world’s greatest cake bakers make mistakes from time to time; and while we’re on the subject, homemade cakes aren’t all about visual aesthetics anyway. It’s worth bearing in mind that a cake doesn’t have to look aesthetically please for it to taste delicious. When mistakes are made at point of creation, you don’t have to waste it – get the parts which can still be eaten and freeze them you can pop them in a trifle or tiramisu, then let your dog have the rest.

On this page we give you tips assisting you to help prefect your easy cake recipe baking skills which will make you, and your dog; more consistently delighted with your cake creations.

Preparing your tin for baking. Generously smear the butter on the inside of the tin, lard or margarine afterwards you can use the wrappers for greasing, if that’s what you bought them in). Recipes usually ask you to line the tin with grease proof paper but aluminium foil works just as well and is easier to fold into corners. Lining a round tin is a little fiddly but there are precut shapes available to buy to assist you in this. When it comes to making fruit cakes its advised to use double thickness lining also remember to cover the top with paper this will help to stop the cake burning on its surface.

Easy Cake Recipe Measuring. Never disregard the advice given on any cake recipe book. Obviously, you can reduce of increase in ration, if your cakes going to be bigger or smaller but be sure that the changes are all equal. Bare in mind that your cooking times will alter when using different volumes of batter.

Keep all cake recipe ingredients at room temperature, all the more so for the butter taking it straight from the fridge and beating it will prove to be very hard work.

When it comes to adding flour into the batter, sift it, holding the sieve about 10cm/4in above the mixing bowl; this helps avoid lumps and introduces more air into the mixture.

Consistency of Dropping. What this means is, As you scoop the batter tip the spoon as you go to pour it out, and you will find the mixture drops off slowly. However, don’t panic if the batter doesn’t move as you’d expect. Try thinning it by using a few drops of milk. Too runny? Sift in a little flour.

Testing for ‘done ness’. Do not presume the cooking times from the recipe are accurate. Always check at least 15 minutes before the end by checking the center of the cake with a knife, going well down into the mixture. If it comes out clean, it’s done, Give it 5 more minutes if it’s soggy.

Cake Decorating. Allow your cake to cool down before putting on the icing. Make the easy cake recipe even easier by as you can leave the icing or frosting and dust the top with icing sugar (powered) instead.
